In my opinion, I don’t believe there are only certain circumstances that cause someone to become addicted to social media.
There are a number of important considerations for ensuring that the metaverse doesn’t get overrun by negative experiences. For example, there needs to be a way to block users from harassing others—it’s not okay in real life and it shouldn’t be okay in the metaverse. Similarly, sexual content can create all sorts of issues with tracking who exactly is using the metaverse and whether or not they have permission to do so. There will also need to be tools for making sure inappropriate content doesn’t wind up on devices used by children or teens—there are so many ways people can use their avatars in ways they don’t intend (think BDSM role-play), that having strict age controls will be essential.
Much of the world’s population is already online, but not everyone has access to the same tools. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg wants to change that. In a letter to investors earlier in the year, he stated that his goal for 2016 was to build the first fully immersive VR social platform.
